Summary: Week One

Week one of DS106 has come to a close!

It was a whirlwind of a week. I was a bit panicky about it because I joined the class a little late. But in the end I managed to complete the requirements.

The first thing we were required to do was set up a blog. This was a bit easy for me. I already had my domain up and running. I created a site for art/blogging purposes and I’ve been working on it off and on for a few months now.

To make it more suitable for DS106 purposes I had to create a new blogging category with several new sections. One for each of the categories of assignments listed. Since I had already had a menu system in place, I simply had to add these new categories in.

Organization!

As a bonus I also went through and made each category it’s own image marker:

After I was satisfied with how my blog looked, I had to fix up my social media accounts. Prior to this class, I already had a twitter and a youtube. I had to create a soundcloud and a flickr. Flickr gave me the most problems. But this was due to the fact that flickr uses a yahoo account. And I totally forgot my info for my yahoo account. I had to do a password recovery which ended up going through another account which I forgot the info for as well.

I learned a good lesson in organization of accounts and passwords I guess. Following the competition of the social media requirements, I finally began to add content! Below is a list of this week’s  Blog posts:

Final Thoughts

Out of all of the posts, my favorites were probably the visual assignments. I had fun searching through the bank and picking ones to do. The minecraft one especially. In my blog post about it I talk about how difficult it was, but I was really happy with the result. So the work was worth it!

Post/Assignment wise, what gave me the most trouble this week was probably the photo safari. I like the idea, but again, the time limit killed me. It’s a personal issue I have with time limits. I really need to work on it.

Continuing with time, my scheduling was way off this week. Next week I hope to space out my assignments a bit more. I felt a bit burnt out after all this and I figure I need to plan a better schedule to complete these.

I also need to comment more! I got a few in this week, but I don’t feel like interacted with the class as much as I could have.
I need to bump up my use of twitter as well. No one’s going to read anything on here if they don’t know I exist!

Regarding Visual Storytelling in general,  I feel like I got a better grasp of what it really is. I learned to let images do the talking. The importance of putting thought into the photos you take. And just how effective certain imagery can be on the human mind. The video we were required to watch was probably the most influential for me this week. In it a photographer by the name of Jason Eskenazi discussed digital storytelling and visual literacy. Toward the end he made a comment about how photography is innate and how visual literacy is something we’re all born with. This triggered me to try and restart my overall photography process. It brought me back to the beginning baby stages. As I put in my photo reflection post, I’m looking at the art of photography with open eyes now. I feel like I had become to wrapped up in the the “prettyness” of the images instead of the story. I’m sure this lesson will help me out in other areas of life/art (especially comic making!)

So basically, it was a good first week of DS106! I’m hype and ready to start the next! 〜( ̄▽ ̄〜)
